Tribal Newsletter Wins National Media Award

Native American Journalists Association Recognizes St. Regis Mohawk Tribe
Akwesasne Territory.  The Native American Journalists Association’s (NAJA) presented a national media award to the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe for its newsletter, SRMT Kawenni:ios (Good Words).  The association presented the award on Friday, July 23rd at its annual conference.  This year’s conference was held during the week of July 19 in St. Paul, Minnesota.  The newsletter won second place in the category of “Best Layout of a Newsletter.”
SRMT Kawenni:ios competed nationally with other tribal newsletters submitted for consideration of the award.   “We are happy that our Public Information Office received this prestigious award,” said Tribal Chief Monica M. Jacobs.  “Receiving this award at a national level is a real achievement.”
“Congratulations to our Public Information staff,” remarked Tribal Chief Mark Garrow.  “This is a positive reflection on our dedicated work force.  We look forward to seeing future improvements, too.”  The Tribe began publishing its newsletter in November, 2007.  Since then it has gone from a partial color publication on newsprint to a full color piece on higher-grade paper without increasing costs.  “The staff has worked hard to make improvements on the newsletter,” noted Tribal Chief Randy Hart.  “We truly appreciate their efforts.”
“This has been a real team effort,” explained David Staddon, Director of Public Information.  “We are always looking for ways to make it better.  Aimée Benedict has been here since the beginning and does the layout on the newsletter.”
“No doubt that publishing an attractive newsletter motivates readers to pick it up and see what’s inside,” said Aimée Benedict, Publications Manager for the tribe. “We enjoy a great relationship with our print company, Dellas Graphics and they have been an important part of improving the newsletter.”
Features such as Reconnecting to the Rez appear to be popular with newsletter readers.  Community members can stay up to date with tribal events.  Those who live away from Akwesasne can maintain their connection with their friends and families.  The newsletter is also available on the tribe’s website at www.srmt-nsn.gov.
